TNA Sec Gen Files an FR case challenging PTA regulations:30th Sept '11

TNA Press Release on filing of SC FR case on PTA Regulations

The TNA filed a fundamental rights case SC FR 449/2011 in the public interest in the Supreme Court this week challenging a number of Regulations - including those enabling the government to continue to keep detainees and surrendees in custody - that were promulgated by the President last month. The General Secretary of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi, Mavai Senathirajah filed the petition through his Attorney-at-Law Moahan Balendra, seeking an interim suspension of the Regulations, and declarations that the Regulations were violative of the fundamental rights of the People and were illegal and invalid.

In a statement issued earlier this month, the TNA condemned the Regulations and stated that they would “ensure the seamless continuation of emergency rule, replete with the grant of extraordinary powers to the executive over the liberty of subjects, despite the termination of the state of emergency.”
